This week Presenter and Star of Sure Radio's "Dance Beats" Vijay Patel is on holiday and can't present the show.

The show must go on......

Would you like to present the show this Friday, no prior experience required! All you need is the following:

A little confidence
An interest in Dance / Breaks / Electro / Tech - etc
To be free between 8 and 9.30 pm on Friday and able to get to Sure HQ

I can't help but notice the number of groups popping up on Facebook asking for my mobile number! If theres one thing you should do this week, its back up your address book. It's actually not that hard to do and if you haven't got a cable/bluetooth to do it with a computer why not try this free service?

If your already a "pay and go" customer and fancy paying even less why not check out Blyk. They are offering a free sim card, 217 txts and 43 mins a month for absolutely nothing!

Whats the catch?

You have to be between 16 and 24
They are going to send you spam picture adverts (which won't cost)
and fill and unused space on your txts with adverts (just make sure you fill those 160 characters and there will be no space!)
Its invite only, although at the moment you can text a special number for an invite

Since we moved into our new house we have been having problems with BT Broadband, mainly very slow speeds at certain times of the evening.

Finally after numerous engineer visits which didn't produce any results they have let us leave our 12month contact and move providers. I'm convinced the problem was due to BT congestion at the exchange however getting anyone at BT to admit this would be impossible!

We are now with Be Unilmited, who have recently dropped their prices - so far so good *fingers crossed*, they also have an offer where you can get one month free if I refer you, so if you are thinking of getting it drop me an e-mail

What i've been doing...

All quiet on the blogging front! Well it has been for me, but thats because i've been monster busy!

Mainly working on Sure Radio stuff it has to be said, the new website has gone live, mostly without any hitches, although theres still a few bugs to be ironed out. It's fantastic to see people blogging, podcasting and generally adding content like its going out of fashion!

Both studios in the Union's fantastic new Media Hub have now been completed - good times! The live studio is fabulous spacious and sounds like a dream and the second studio is going to be a hive of activity for podcasting, interviewing and production work, as well as serving as a backup if the other one explodes! Check them both out in all their glory via the newly installed webcams, where we are broadcasting!

The new memebers meeting went well, a fantastic turnout and apart from me failing to give a presentation on my mac, it went without a hitch! I'm looking forward to hearing lots of new shows on the air soon! We videoed the whole meeting and this should be online very soon!

So what's next for me? We'll its back to Lectures for me, i'm studying a lot of AI courses this semester and my dissertation is needing some serious attention!

Finally an apology - to all my friends, if i've been too busy to pay you enough attention, i'm sorry and will be coming to a pub near you soon!

I decided to go home for the weekend, mainly due to the internet being broke and having nothing better to do. Activites so far include cooking paella outdoors, tasty! And building a fire on my parents patio, classic!

Wandering through London trying to find a night bus, stumbled across St. Paul's, it looks pretty impressive lit up at night. The dome wasn't illuminated so couldn't really get a shot of that.

Getting Photo Blogging to work with O2 and a Sony Ericsson W880i

I have just got a W880i as an ugrade on my O2 contract. I noticed that it had a feature to post to Blogger, however I had major problems getting this to work straight out of the box.

I searched the internet to try and find a decent answer, however information was a bit sparse - so here is a complete guide.

Here are the steps I look to get it working: (these may also work with other phones that experience the same problem)

1. Menu -> Settings -> Connectivity -> Data comm. -> Data Accounts
2. Delete each of the accounts in this section by pressing the "C" button
3. Menu -> Settings -> Connectivity -> Internet Settings -> Internet Profiles
4. Again Delete each of the accounts
5. Go here and click the "go" button next to "O2 Active"
6. Fill in your details and click next a few times, you should get two text messages - press "install settings" on each of these.
7. Menu -> Settings -> Connectivity -> Data comm. -> Data Accounts
8. Edit "O2 WAP GPRS"
9. Change APN to "mobile.o2.co.uk"
10. Change Username to "o2web"
11. Menu -> Settings -> Connectivity -> Internet Settings -> Internet Profiles
12. edit "O2 WAP GPRS" ( more -> settings )
13. Change "Use proxy" to "No"

That's it - simple!

Now find a picture and select "Send to blog", this will either create a new blog if it's your first one, or add it to your existing posts.

Once you had done this you should be sent a text message even if you have previously had problems. The text contains details on how to login to your account from the web, doing this allows you to attach your phone posts to your main blog.

w880i and iSync

The W880i is not one if iSync's supported devices, however most Sony Ericsson's talk the same language so a chap called David Forser has written a fantastic plugin for iSync

New Phone & Work

I got a new phone today, a W880i, as I managed to get O2 to upgrade me slightly early as I left my old phone in a taxi, whoops! I had been using a K750i I had borrowed off Holly, however the joystick had gone (as often does on this phone) and it was driving me mad. I asked a few times if I could upgrade early and was told no, however O2 are clearly taking customer retention seriously again, as one mention of changing networks and they were willing to cut a deal.

I've finished my years placement at Sheffield web design company Magic Number Media and am currently working on the "Media Hub" Project at Sheffield Union, to ensure that Sure Radio have two fully functional radio studios for the start of freshers week! There's lots of work to be done, but its all good fun!

I have decided to go over to the dark side and get BT internet! Now that I don't live in a house of 9, having a 16MB Bulldog line is probably a bit over the top! I have to say depsite some people's experiences I think that Bulldog are a good ISP, we had a blistering fast downloads (although we did live very close to the exchange) and although their customer service isn't great (like most ISP's in the UK) I never really had cause to call them.

The main reason for going with BT though was so that I could get hold of their TV service Vision which is going to work out as a very cheap PVR. They currently have a deal where its £30 installation and you have to take out a minimum of one month's subscription (cheapest is £6), which you can cancel after the first month. £36, not bad for a PVR running Microsoft IPTV.

As part of the deal we now have a home hub (you've probably seen the adverts), the wirelss on it is rubbish though, so I have plugged in a linksys router with some custom firmware and cranked up the transmission power. Now even Holly with here dodgy wireless dongle gets a good signal!

New Home

I have just moved into a new house in Crookes - we got in slightly late due to the previous tenants decided that they did not have to move out on time! Spend most of the weekend sitting in pubs waiting around, so not all bad!

Wiimote + Ableton

Oli from the Mysterons was up this weekend - so we decided to have some fun with the Wiimotes and Ableton which he had on his laptop.

Searching Google provided a few applications for Mac OS that would
allow the Wiimote to be paired and generated MIDI signals which could then be used by Ableton.

The accelerometers in the Wiimote are very sensative, so it takes some messing around with to get usable results.

Mingle with Mii

The Nintendo Wii lets you share your Mii's (little characters) with other friends who also have Wii's.

In order to do this you need to add the other person as a friend and they need to do the same, then you can turn on your mingling settings and the other persons Mii's should turn up in the Mii parade

Steps to add a friend
1. Go to the Wii Message Board
2. Click "Create Message"
3. Click Address Book
4. Click Register
5. Click Wii
6. Enter your friends Wii Number
you can find yours on the first page of the address book, click left again when on page 1

You will then need to get the other person to do the same. Once they have done this head over to the Mii channel and enter the Mii parade - you need to enable the Travel setting found in the parade. Once you have done this - you then need to enable Mingling for each of the Mii's you have created by editing them - simple huh!

As you may or may not know - I just got a Wii!

It's awesome, so much fun and if you haven't tried one out yet you really should. We spent over an hour last night just making our own little characters called Mii's and that was before we even started playing any games.

Gmail for your own domain

You can now have Google Aps (Gmail, Calendar, Docs etc) for your own domain name. I've just switched over mattyw.co.uk to try it out and have been impressed.

Gmail's spam filter is much better than the one I had been using in Thunderbird and picks up about 98% of spam i get sent.
